The Hidden Genius Project

The Hidden Genius Project is an extraordinary program focused on mentoring young Black men — primarily high school-age — in technology creation, entrepreneurship and leadership. Founded in Oakland in 2012 by a group of Black technologists and entrepreneurs, it was established to address the deep inequity between career opportunities in tech and lack of access many young Black men face.

Over time the program has grown significantly. The core offering is a no-cost, 15-month Intensive Immersion Program. Participants receive more than 800 hours of training in computer science, software development, business fundamentals, entrepreneurship, leadership and life skills — laying the groundwork for careers or startups in tech or business.

Through my collaboration with Hidden Genius, I worked with several young men in their cohorts, providing mentorship, feedback and support as they shaped their ideas, built projects, and explored what it means to launch a business or tech venture. I advised them, helped refine their business plans, and supported their journeys toward entrepreneurship or meaningful careers.

This kind of work aligns deeply with my core belief: opportunity should be widely available. The Hidden Genius Project doesn’t just teach coding or business — it builds community, fosters confidence, and gives young Black men a real pathway to influence, impact and ownership. Supporting them has been another way for me to contribute to mission-driven capitalism, uplift communities, and help founders of all backgrounds realize their potential.
